Insurance was overcharging due to Partisan Politics or an incompetent Board?

Two recent reports show that drivers in New Brunswick have been left on their auto insurance by $ 500 million have drawn accusations that the New Brunswick Insurance Board may have allowed it to happen. Although Insurance Board released a report that essentially agreed with a report of expert actuarial has the Board ever drew criticism from the opposition Liberals, their partisan ties to the Conservative cause in the overcharging that happened over a period of five years.

If the allegations are true, is a clear case of a regulatory agency not looking out for the very constituency, they were created to serve the best interests of the community. About the reason for the overcharging was allowed to happen has something to do with the political affiliation of the Board Chair, is another question to be answered. Unless the Board Chair stood to gain nothing financially, we would ask why they would serve in a post, supervision, and allows overcharging to occur.

The overcharging might be a case of the Management Board is asleep at the wheel, while the auto insurance companies drove off with more money than they should have. Perhaps it is incompetence and not necessarily the party affiliation — who is to blame. Perhaps those from the Liberal Party throw accusations by the conservative Board Chair just to generate enough ill will to enforce the removal of the Management Board Chair. It could also strengthen their hand as on the consumer side, when the next elections are due.

In each case, the New Brunswick consumers losers in this situation, regardless of who is to blame. It is promising that the Government will look closely at the New Brunswick Insurance Board and determine what happened during the five-year period. If the reports findings are accurate, they should quickly remedy the situation and ensure that consumers who were affected the whole. The next step would be for them to look closely at the members of the Board and ask for the resignations of all the parties involved. This would also help to assure that the Board can be efficient and do the job, it was created to do. A new Board of Directors would also send a signal to the auto insurance companies that they could not take advantage of consumers in the future.

It is a pity that there is almost needs to have an oversight agency for another oversight agency. Yet, the supervision of voters for every government unit role. It is perhaps a wake-up call for New Brunswick citizens to focus on whether the designated groups and elected officials are doing what they are charged to do. To get drawn into playing partisan politics do not serve the best interests of the public. Let us hope that the next five years, the New Brunswick Insurance Board will do the job they should do.
